High School Mentoring Coordinator

AmeriCorps Retention Project

THE POSITION
Will developed and coordinated a mentorship program between Western Oregon University (WOU) and two high school partners to increase college-going aspirations among high school students.

HIS WORK

Will recruited, trained, and inspired 35 WOU students to mentor 114 mentees. One of the special things about this project was that many of the WOU students were recruited to serve as mentors at their alma mater, specifically at Roosevelt High School and McKay High School. Together, mentors and mentees participated in 644 hours of mentoring.

THE IMPACT
As a result of the mentor program, a college-going culture is being developed among the high school student mentees. Through the program, students are able to interact with people from their own community who are succeeding in college, and the high school students are beginning to see college as a possibility for themselves. Next year, the program will continue to inspire and connect more high school students to college-going aspirations through mentorship.

“Will was responsible for implementing a new program and he never shied away from the challenge. Will established a strong foundation that will continue to provide outstanding service to WOU students and students from our partner schools for future years. Staff from [Roosevelt and McKay high schools] have commented about the positive impact the program has had on their students. I am certain Will has directly contributed to the retention of students served by the program.” - Rob Findtner, Director of Admissions at Western Oregon University
