Carla Ingrando
Civic Engagement Coordinator

To address issues affecting low-income community members, Carla strengthened Pacific University's capacity to support service activities. One project she focused on was expanding campus and community access to financial literacy education.

Pacific University is the only higher education institution in western Washington County. Local community service agencies and schools look to the university’s institutional capacity to help in meeting chronic and increasing community needs.

Carla supported the College of Business to start a new service-learning course. The course, Community Financial Literacy, educated students about finances and empowered them to earn class credit while volunteering. These students taught financial literacy classes with Operation Hope and Financial Beginnings to teen parents, high school, and college students.

The new service-learning course will be offered once a year by the College of Business and, as a result, the partnership between Pacific University, Financial Beginnings, and Operation Hope will be sustained. Next year, more students will become educated on financial literacy and will provide training to the community.

Through this collaboration, Pacific University was able to partner with business leaders, nonprofits, staff, faculty, and administration to provide this opportunity. Stephanie Stokamer, Director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Pacific University says, "That kind of diverse collaboration is pretty rare in higher education."
