AmeriCorps Retention Project

Amy recruited students and managed the Concordia University Student Service Corps, a program that matches college student mentors with youth mentees to address low graduation rates, low-test scores, high gang affiliation, and lack of positive role models in northeast Portland Public Schools.

Amy recruited and supported 67 college students to serve 753 hours with 126 mentees. As a result of participating in the program, 67% of mentees surveyed said that they wanted to do better in their academic classes and 86% of mentees said they felt more capable of accessing resources to attend college.

As a result of Amy's outstanding service, Concordia University recently hired her to serve as the new Assistant Director of the Office of Service Leadership. Next year, the program looks forward to supporting even more college student mentors and making an even greater impact in northeast Portland Public Schools.

“Amy performed at a high-level and provided a great year of service. Her work has built the capacity for the expansion of the Student Service Corps program and has enabled our programs to provide even greater outreach to at-risk youth in Portland.” - Scott Ferguson, Director of Service Leadership
