Alexis Powell
Student Engagement Coordinator
Community Engagement and Service
AmeriCorps*VISTA

THE POSITION
To support student involvement in poverty-focused service activities, Alexis coordinated civic engagement and leadership opportunities at Linfield College. One of the ways she did this was by mentoring student leaders to organize Alternative Break trips.

HER WORK
Alexis increased Linfield's capacity to manage an Alternative Break program by mentoring and empowering students to lead their peers on Alternative Break trips. Students were trained and supported to plan, fundraise, and facilitate trips. As a result, student leaders sharpened their skills, emerged as role models, and inspired other college students to get involved with service and leadership opportunities.

HER WORK
Alexis expanded Linfield's capacity to provide this experience to students. Alternative Breaks are important because they give students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of critical community needs, both nationally and locally. By the end of their Alternative Break experience, Linfield students were able to better understand how social factors, such as race and socio-economic status, impact the community. Many participants reflected that their trip was transformational and advocated for their peers to get involved. One participant said, "Alternative Spring Break was a life changing experience...I plan on doing [it] again and would recommend others to do it as well. [It’s a week] that could potentially change [your] life.”
