Welcome to Elementary Physical Education!

Kindergarten classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:25-1:00

Grades 1 through 5 classes are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays

Hello! My name is Karen Bonfield and I am beginning my 6th year teaching elementary physical education at Orange Charter School.  I have taught at the elementary and middle school level for many years and also coached at the middle school and high school level. I am also a USATF certified coach specializing in high jump and hold a kindergarten through high school teaching certificate as well as being a certified personal trainer. I am a strong proponent of physical fitness and its components are integrated into every activity our classes take part in. I believe our students not only need to understand  the benefits of physical activity, but to also value physical activity over their lifetime.

Student Requirements for Physical Education :

Comfortable clothing for activity.

Well- fitting sneakers that are not “open” in any areas.  Socks are important to absorb sweat , prevent chafing, and shield the foot from any debris that may enter. If boots are worn that day, please send sneakers for your child to change in to.

Appropriate clothing for outdoor activity.  The gym is shared with the middle school on Wednesdays and we may be outside on those days.

Bringing a water bottle to class is not necessary.

What else does my student need to know?

We begin every class with warm up activities and introduce yoga poses at different intervals.

All students will be engaging in activities that are research-based and include moderate to vigorous activity. The Locomotor skills of running, skipping, leaping, jumping, hopping and sliding at low, medium, and high levels are emphasized and integrated into our many lead up sports and games that include throwing and kicking skills and striking with body parts and objects.

Our activities are fun and include individual and teamwork strategies. We encourage everyone to take part in being active- no standing on the sidelines!

If your child is ill or injured- Please send a note explaining the problem and the restriction. Your child will not engage in any physical activity that day.
