Decile Rating

posted Nov 18, 2014, 1:40 PM by Lorraine Williamson

You may have read in the paper that our decile rating is now 6. The implications for our school are obviously around a significant drop in funding. Decile rating is based on the "demographics and relative wealth of a community" so it is surprising that our decile was 2 almost 11 years ago and is now 6. As I stated in the newspaper I do not think this is a fair reflection of our school community. We have a high level of transient ( students who move from school to school) and I think this would make it difficult to truly evaluate our circumstances. I have to admit to knowing little about how the decision is made but I fully understand the impact this will have on our school. Given that the Minister of Education has signalled her dislike for the system I do not want to put a lot of time and effort into a review to find the system is "canned." I would be happy to see schools funded to adequately meet the needs of students.
