Open Hardware Geiger Counter

In recent posts I mentioned the nuclear crisis happening in Japan and the lack of measurement of radioactivity levels at sea.  Also there was a note on how robots are helping the crisis but I would love to share here some elements that may very practically enable Protei to take an active part in this crisis.

Recently, a movement of maker have been producing DIY Geiger counter, and just like us, a project recently got fully funded via Kickstarter here. The hardware is currently under development in Tokyo, but should be available and Open Hardware in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

The idea is that, after the oil spill version, we may be able to fit a Protei with Geiger counter on the mast (to measure air radiation) and on the hull immersed (for water contamination). Geiger Counter (article of Wikipedia), also check personal dosimeter is a very interesting device also because it returns measurements immediately (as shown in the video above).

I don't mean to create a distraction to Protei Oil Spill, but I think it is another interesting possible use of Protei, a "Protei-Geiger" :)
