Shortly before the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, workers had finished a process known as cementing, which seals the bottom of a well with a plug of cement. BP planned to come back later, make holes in the cement and pipe, and produce oil from the well, but in the meantime, the cement was supposed to prevent oil and gas from escaping up the well. Though investigators have yet to determine the cause, they may focus on problems with cementing.
