Sign-in for Multi-factor Authentication
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)is a system that verifies a user’s identity at login by requiring multiple forms of credentials. This makes use of credentials in two forms: your password, and a trusted device ( a phone or tablet ) that is not easily replicated.
MFA greatly reduces the risk of an account becoming compromised, as it’s incredibly unlikely for a hacker to access a user’s phone at aka.ms/mfasetup. Microsoft gives us a few options of what our second factor will be: text message token, phone call token, and an authenticator app, available for iOS and Android devices.
What makes multi-factor authentication a strong security measure is the fact that your authentication factors must consist of a combination of two factors that are not easily duplicated. The three most common factors are:
Something you know – Passwords or memorized PINs
Something you have – A smartphone or a secure USB key
Something you are – A fingerprint or facial recognition
A combination of two factors makes it harder for attackers to hack an account because if a password or a pin is compromised, a smartphone code or a fingerprint (which are harder to steal) would still be needed to complete the sign-in.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), you are prompted for your user name and password plus an authentication code generated by an authenticator application. This is also sometimes known as two-factor authentication or 2FA. The 6-digit verification code generated may be referred to as a one-time password (OTP).
