Our History

In 1991, Ohr Somayach was approached by a small group of families in the Gallo Manor/Wendywood suburbs to open a shteibel in the area.  Shiurim were arranged in the evenings from the outset to satisfy the thirst of Sandton Jewry for more Torah. During that first year the rabbis of Ohr Somayach, along with other community leaders, took turns every Shabbos coming out to the fledgling congregation.

In 1992, Rabbi Ze’ev and Nechama Kraines arrived with their family and have transformed the community into a vibrant learning centre, famous for its warmth and spirit.

The original rental property was purchased in 1994 and a vigorous building campaign was undertaken to expand the facility to its present size. As the membership multiplied tenfold to over 130 active families,
