2017 Contest Rules

It is time for the annual Ides of March Poetry Contest, open exclusively to OPA members.

THE FUN PART

A $25 cash prize will be for the winning poem. The winning poem and the two honorable mentions will be printed in our annual OPA journal Common Threads. The winner will be invited to present a reading at the OPA picnic in July.

THE NITTY GRITTY

  • Submit up to three poems, all submitted together—any style, any subject, any form, but each no longer than one page.
  • No previously published work.
  • Only one three-poem entry per person.
  • Submitted poems will not be returned.
  • Traditional mailing instructions: Include one copy of each poem, titled, but no poet’s name, along with a cover sheet listing poet’s name, address, e-mail address (or telephone number with area code), and titles of poems. Mail the packet, with the $5 entry fee (check payable to Ohio Poetry Association), to:

  • Electronic submissions:
    Format poems in 12 pt. Times New Roman.

Bookmarks Contest

The Ohio Poetry Association is now accepting entries for its newest contest. Three winning poems will be chosen each to be published on bookmarks. One side of the bookmark will feature the poem, poet’s name, and artwork. The other side will have information about OPA and brief biographical notes about the poet. Three poets will be chosen and each will receive 100 bookmarks bearing his/her poem and bio, which can be distributed at public readings and anywhere the poets choose. OPA will offer copies at Association functions.

CONTEST DETAILS

  • Eligibility: All OPA members and any poet residing in Ohio.
  • Submit one poem, any style, any subject. Use Arial or Times font, size 10 pt. Poem must fit a 2″x8″ layout (see the sample bookmark at right).
  • Submit your choice of artwork. Only original artwork or free clip art is acceptable and must fit the 2″x8″ layout. Original photos taken by the author are accepted.
  • No previously published work will be accepted.
  • Non-winning entries will be disposed.
  • Entry fee of $5.
  • Traditional mailing instructions: Include two copies of the poem--one with title only and one listing poet’s name, address, and e-mail address (or telephone number with area code). Include a printed copy of the artwork/photo. Mail the packet, with the $5 entry fee (make check payable to Ohio Poetry Association), to:
