-Fundraising for the grade 6 students. We are hosting a cake raffle on Friday, February 17th. We are asking that each grade 6 student bring in a cake to help sell raffle tickets and raise money for the end of the year trip and ceremony. The more cakes we have to display, the more money will be raised and less money parents will have to pay at the end of the year. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and help.

-The reading program writing assignment has been extended until this Friday, January 27th. The students are learning a new genre of writing as well as a new format. They are doing a book critique and creating a website where their descriptive piece of writing will be posted. The websites are only accessible by OCSB staff and students.

-Class update: The students will be doing presentations of their ecosystems this week. Once the presentations are finished, we will begin a new science unit in Air and Flight.

-The students will be building a diorama that demonstrates a specific ecosystem (e.g., tundra, deciduous forest, tropical rain forest, taiga, grasslands, freshwater, coral reef, deserts). They will not only build the ecosystem but they will write a descriptive report that will include the organisms needed to sustain life (e.g., food web, producers, consumers, decomposers). The students will need to bring in a shoebox or a small box and other materials they will need to build their ecosystem.

*What is happening in our classroom:

Social Studies- The students are beginning to do research on 4 different aspects of our Global Community. The students are going to be working in pairs on making an electronic brochure on global economy, environmental, social and political aspects. Time frame is October 17-28


The final task (individual) will be to write a letter and make a video to persuade the Prime Minister to provide funding for their organization. The students will choose one of the 4 aspects that most interest them during their group project and they will create their own organization. Time frame is October 31 to November 11


-Their will not be any new Dictée words until we are finished both Social Studies tasks. When we begin our science unit, there will be new vocabulary words to study. The first science unit will be Biodiversity, the study of all living things.


-In Physical Education, we have been working on cooperative games and volleyball skills. The Health program will begin next week and the focus will be on healthy eating and healthy choices.


-In Visual Arts, the students have made a self portrait. They are currently working on creating and colouring using pastels an international organisation`s symbol of their choice.


-In Drama, the students have worked on several short plays in small groups. The students will be expected to prepare a final task that will have students create their own screenplay from a fable book.

-milk and pizza are available to be purchased through School Cash Online and the school is encouraging payment that way. If you are unable to pay online, please send a request in the agenda for forms and Mrs. Sanford will make photocopies. The milk forms are due on September 19th and the pizza forms are due on September 21st.

-Student verification and consent forms have been sent home in your child's agenda. Please ensure to fill out and sign the forms. It would be appreciated if the verification forms are returned by Friday, September 16th. 

-Program Night/Meet the Teacher will be Thursday, September 15th.  School Council will provide pizza 5:30-6: 00 pm. The principal will greet the parents in the gymnasium 6:00- 6:10 and teachers will make two twenty minutes presentations starting at 6:10 (i.e. 6:10-6:30 and 6:30-6:50).

-The first Social Studies unit covered will be Canada`s Interactions With The Global Community.
-The two Arts programs covered until Christmas will be Drama and Visual Arts. The new French curriculum has a strong emphasis on Oral Language and Drama will allow many opportunities for the students to practice speaking in French.
-French will be integrated in all subject areas throughout the year. Integrated subject areas will allow the students to learn grammar structures, verb tenses, reading, writing and oral in real life authentic situations.
-Science will not be covered until our Social Studies unit is finished. Research and through experience demonstrates that focusing on one heavy unit at a time allows for deeper understanding of the content. The first science unit will be Biodiversity, the study of all living things.
-Physical Education and Health: At the beginning of the year, the focus will be cooperative games and then we will follow the school board athletic schedule for skill building. The health program will focus on food and nutrition.
