Vimy 100th Anniversary Trip

In April 2017, over 7,000 Canadian Students will be in France to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. For the last 8 years students at John McCrae Secondary School have been experiencing history first hand by visiting the sites of the those that have gone before us.  We are planning to be apart of this adventure into our past.

The dates are April 6th to April 17th, 2017

The following video provide you with a concept of what the experience is like on these trips.  Another video can be seen with the Vimy Pilgrimage award located below.

Vimy 2017

At John McCrae we have been running Canadian History trips to Europe every two years but with the 100th Anniversary in 2017 we wish to be apart of this event so we will run consecutive trips for the first and only time. Therefore we will not be running another trip until 2019. As always with the connection to curriculum the present grade 9 and 10 students will have the first opportunity to apply for this trip.
However the trip will be opened up to grade 11 students, space provided.  The maximum number of students is set at 45. (Find attached at the bottom the Welcome letter to parents/guardians that is being sent home. Also find the application form attached below.)

As with our previous trips the students selected to go will partake in a series of events before we leave including: working with the Embassies of the countries we will visit, hands on activities with our military, selecting and researching veterans who had fought at the battle sites, and other activities to enhance the student's experience and preparation for the trip.

This trip will take us to 5 countries over twelve days. We will start in France and end in Poland.  (See itinerary attached at the bottom).  Vimy Ridge is the one event that all visiting Canadians will visit but we will also be covering aspects of Canada's involvement in WW2 and a visit to Auschwitz to commemorate those lost in the Holocaust.

As well as Canadian military history and history of WW1 and WW2, we will be visiting cities and other locations of the countries on our trip to experience their vibrate culture, food and people.

The Vimy Foundation
The message of Vimy Ridge is one of bravery and sacrifice. The battle, which took place on April 9, 1917, is commonly highlighted as a turning point in Canadian history, where the four Canadian divisions fought together as a unified fighting force for the first time. While 3,598 Canadian soldiers were killed during the battle, the impressive victory over German forces is often cited as the beginning of Canada’s evolution from dominion to independent nation. The Vimy Foundation is working to spread the word to Canada’s youth — through initiatives like the Vimy Prize and the Vimy Pin — so that all Canadians understand the importance of Vimy to the nation’s identity.

To underscore the sacrifices made by Canada, which suffered 60,000 fatalities during the First World War, France granted Canada 107 hectares of land at Vimy to build and maintain a memorial. That iconic site is today considered one of the most stirring of all First World War monuments, and certainly Canada’s most important war memorial.
