Holiday Concert 2009

Congratulations to all the music students who performed in this year's Holiday Concert.  All of the ensembles performed at a high level and did a great job representing the school.

The concert began with the Concert Band performing two pieces.  They first played a holiday favourite, The Christmas Song, and then introduced the audience to one of their Musicfest pieces, Spitfire by Gary P. Gilroy.  This exciting piece was a great way to start the program as it featured wonderful rhythmic playing from the band and exciting percussion parts.

The Concert Band's performance was followed up by a performance from the Senior Guitar Ensemble.  They played three pieces starting with the Spanish Piece, La Pastoreta, arranged by Eythor Thorlaksson.  The ensemble then performed a Bill Tyers' beautiful arrangement of O Holy Night.  Finishing off their set, they played Andante by Ferdinando Carulli.  A special thanks goes out to Ryan Brown for taking over the leadership of the Senior Guitar Ensemble for this concert.

The Clarinet Ensemble then performed Rondeau Gracieuse by Kevin Kaisershot.  The ensemble really did a great job on this performance and showed marked improvement from the first concert of the year.

The first half of the concert closed with a performance by the Jazz Orchestra.  They began their set with their rendition of the Count Basie classic, Sweet Georgia Brown.  This performance featured a piano solo by Alex Kurkjian and a Tenor Sax Solo by Nick Crawford.  The Jazz Orchestra then performend Stephen Bulla's arrangement of The Incredibles.  This performance of music from the popular Pixar film was definitely a crowd pleaser.

After the intermission, the audience was treated to a performance by Quarrel of the Foes.  They began by playing One Evening by Canadian artist Feist.  This performance featured a piano solo by Ashley Kurkjian and an Alto Sax solo by Alex Kurkjian.  Quarrel of the Foes then followed this up with a rousing performence of Christmas Eve / Sarajevo 12/24.  This arrangement of the popular Trans Siberian Orchestra tune allowed all of the members of the band to show off their skills.

While the Elektric Band was preparing for its performance, the Junior Guitar Ensemble made its debut performance of the year.  The ensemble performed two pieces at a very high level, and showed off the result that can come with hard work.  The ensemble first performed Spring Song by Mozart, and then followed it up with a performance of Evil Ways by Santana.  This performance featured solos by Phil MacGreggor and Alex Kung.

The Elektric Band then performed two pieces.  They began by performing an original song by lead singer / trombonist Emily Burda.  This performance was very successful as it demonstrated the band's wonderful creative instincts.  The band then performed the famous latin jazz piece, Spain by Chick Corea.  This performance was very polished and featured the entire band.

Ending off the evening, the Concert Band returned to perform two more pieces.  The began by performing Gypsy Dance by Joseph Compello.  This unique work featured Spencer Parent on tympani, Nick Crawford on Tenor Sax, Ashley Kurkjian on Alto Sax, Colin Kealty on Trumpet and Laura Carnegie on Piccollo.  The Concert Band then concluded the concert on a happy note by playing Leroy Anderson's Holiday Favourite, Sleigh Ride.

The 2009 Holiday Concert was a wonderful evening.  Thanks to all who showed their support!
