The John McCrae Concert Band was awarded a Gold Standard at this year's Capital Region Music Festival.  This is the first Gold earned at the festival by this ensemble, and should set the stage for the upcoming jazz performances next week.  A special congratulations goes out to this year's Honour Award Winner, Daniel Li.

The festival took place at Earl of March High School in Kanata and featured many of the region's top school bands.  This year's ensemble was entered at level 400, which is significant because it is a level higher than previous entries.

Before playing their program, the band delighted the adjudicators and audience members by playing Space Music (which is becoming a crowd favourite) as their warmup.  The ensemble then began their program with a rousing performance of Spitfire by Gary P. Gilroy.  Adjudicator's praised the band for precise articulations, good tone quality and outstanding rhythmic playing.

Following Spitfire, the band performed Eric Whitacre's lyrical masterpiece, Lux Aurumque.  The band played with a great tone throughout the performance and their focus allowed them to play with tremendous musicality.  Adjudicators made particular note of Connor Boyd's French Horn playing.

The ensemble then concluded by playing its list piece, Gypsy Dance by Joseph Compello.  The band played with consistent articulations and showed a wide range of dynamics and styles in the performance.  The entire ensemble performed brilliantly, and made the selection a perfect ending to a great program.  The adjudicators identified Spencer Parent's Tympani playing as being particularly outstanding.

Thanks you to all the musicians involved, and thanks to everyone who supported the ensemble's efforts.
