David Slaymaker   


Dave has been traveling to Oaxaca for more than 20 years and has a long term interest in Mexican culture and charitable work.  He began working as a volunteer with Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots in 1997.  In 2006 he became the Secretary of the U.S. Board and in 2010, president.  Dave lives in Arkansas and is an Assistant Dean for Outreach at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Science and the Arts where he leads a STEM digital learning initiative and Global Languages program.

Marilyn Horn

Marilyn has been involved with Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots since 2000 as a sponsor and a frequent visitor and volunteer. She is a recently retired Spanish teacher who led several student groups to Oaxaca and introduced them to the CEI. She is currently teaching Spanish in her local Adult Ed. program. She lives in Durham Connecticut.

Melanie Cervenka       


Melanie Denman Cervenka became acquainted with OSCGR in 2008 while studying Spanish in Oaxaca. A native Texan and former banker, she now lives with family in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. In addition to her work with OSCGR, she is a doting grandmother, an award-winning novelist, an American Red Cross Disaster Worker, and an avid traveler. 

Kathy Smith-Wenning       


Kathy has been travelling to Mexico for nearly two decades; her love affair with Oaxaca started 10 years ago and persists. In August 2008 Kathy brought students from Monmouth University to Oaxaca Streetchildren for the culmination of a volunteer project which began in Long Branch, NJ tutoring English for Oaxaca's immigrant community. Kathy’s career path shifts between teaching and working in medical anthropology and respiratory therapy. Kathy lives in Long Branch, NJ.

Brad Wilson

Brad has been travelling with his wife throughout Mexico and Central America for the last 15 years, primarily to study Spanish and to absorb Latin American culture. They have been supporters of OSCGR since their first visit to Oaxaca in 2003. Brad has just made the move from faculty member to administration at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania,  where he serves as the interim associate provost for transformational experiences. In his spare time, he plays flamenco guitar.

Amy Reed- Sandoval

Voting Board Member

Amy Reed-Sandoval is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at El Paso. She has served for the past seven years as the founding director of the Oaxaca Philosophy for Children Initiative, a non-profit program that provides K-12 youth in Oaxaca with free Philosophy for Children classes, often in collaboration with the Centro de Esperanza Infantil. She also founded and runs the Philosophy for Children in the Borderlands program in El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

John Tyler

A Spanish teacher with a Doctorate in Multicultural Education, John discovered Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots in 2005 while studying language and culture in Oaxaca.  He is President of the local Lions Club in Groton, Massachusetts where he lives.  He has represented his club on trips to Oaxaca with eyeglass donations for the Lions Club there each summer when visiting to volunteer at the our center.
