Getting started

  1. Install OverDrive Media Console.
  2. iPod users: install iTunes.
  3. Windows users: complete security upgrade.

Checking out materials

  1. Go to ebooks.nypl.org
  2. Look for materials that are compatible with your device.
  3. Once you find a title you wish to download, click Add to eList on the right side of the entry. You have 30 minutes to complete your checkout before the item is returned to the library’s collection.
  4. If you see an item where this is not an option, click Request Item to be placed in the hold queue.
  5. Click Proceed to Checkout. Enter your library card number and PIN.
  6. You can adjust the lending period to 7, 14, or 21 days. You may check out up to 12 items at one time. After choosing your lending period, click Confirm Checkout, and then click Download on the next page.
  7. A dialog box will appear, prompting you to open an odm file. Open the file with OverDrive Media Console.

Listening and watching

  1. Open OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Select a title.
  3. Click the 'Play' button. The title opens and begins playing.

Transfer files to a portable device

iTunes users: Enable the iTunes setting 'Manually manage music…' for the device.

  1. Open OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Connect your device to your computer.
  3. Select a title. Click the 'Transfer' button.
  4. Follow the steps in the wizard to complete the transfer.

Returning materials

  1. When your item is due, it will automatically expire. After a title has expired, you will not be able to open it again.
  2. Either delete the title (Overdrive Media Console will prompt you to do this) or return to the library’s website to check out the title again. If another patron has already checked out the book, you will need to place a hold on it and be notified when it is again available.
  3. To delete an expired file: Locate the item you wish to delete in the Media Library. Single-click the title to select it, then click the Delete button.
