Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Head of School, Mrs. Deborah B. Russell, announced the appointment of Mr. J. Michael King as the new Head of Upper School on July 1, 2013.
Mr. King comes to NSA from Pitt and Lenoir County Schools in North Carolina, where he has most recently served as an administrator for the last eight years. Mr. King's educational experience is extensive with a particular emphasis in administration. As both a principal and an assistant principal in the high school setting, he has successfully led schools of more than 800 students. He has proven experience challenging, motivating and inspiring students while preparing them for college and beyond. In addition, he has a reputation for building effective teams and providing a collaborative work environment for his faculty and staff.
Mr. King holds both a master’s degree in School Supervision and Administration as well as a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Secondary Science Education from East Carolina University. While receiving his master’s at ECU, he was designated a North Carolina Principal Fellow from 2004-2006, during which he consulted with educational administrators, most notably those in private education. Mr. King was a member of the Distinguished Leadership Practices Cohort of North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals and was also a Student Teacher of the Year Nominee in 1999.
As a 1994 graduate of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and a parent of two daughters currently enrolled in a North Carolina independent school, Mr. King is well-versed in the academic demands of an independent school and a college-preparatory curriculum. “My educational philosophy supports an environment that is engaging, dynamic and challenging,” said Mr. King. “Our students must be ready for the advanced needs of today’s fast-paced, global and technological society. The role of an educator is to provide the students with a learning environment that is energetic and inspires the students to stretch their ability and knowledge, which is exemplified at NSA.”
NSA Head of School Debbie Russell stated, "While our search attracted a very talented candidate pool, Mr. King's academic experience coupled with his strong leadership and communication skills clearly made him the ideal candidate to lead the Upper School at NSA. We are very excited to have a candidate of his caliber and character join our administrative team.”
Mr. King will assume his duties at NSA later this summer. He and his wife, Holly, have two daughters who will join NSA as students in August. We are pleased to welcome the Kings to the NSA family!
