Ways of Giving

At Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, there are almost 800 reasons to give to the Annual Fund- our students, who possess great enthusiasm and excitement for the future of our school. NSA is a place where our students are asked to stretch themselves in many different facets of learning. The mission of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is to provide an academically rigorous college preparatory education in an atmosphere fostering moral character, respect, responsibility and compassion.  With a commitment to honor above all, the school seeks to develop and inspire leaders who value diversity, creativity, scholastic excellence and community service. Your financial contributions to NSA make you a part of a generous tradition of giving by alumni, parents, past parents, grandparents, faculty, corporations, foundations and friends.

Your support of the Annual Fund is extremely important to the financial well being of NSA because the corporations and foundations to whom we submit funding requests often ask, "What percentage of your parents, faculty, alumni, grandparents or past parents support your Annual Fund?" If the percentage of donors from the members of the NSA family is high, the foundation or corporation is more likely to approve our funding request. Gifts of any amount, large or small, are greatly appreciated.

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Annual Fund is an important element in the school's operating budget that supports the mission of the school and is the key component to the school’s continued growth and success.  In an effort to ensure that the Annual Fund receives top priority in the school’s fundraising efforts, to avoid conflicting fundraising practices and to standardize the look of all of NSA’s printed and branded materials, the Board of Trustees adopted a Fundraising and Marketing Policy in 2006.

Any fundraising, marketing or special advertising activity sponsored by a Nansemond-Suffolk Academy club, class, athletic team and parent or alumni group must be approved in advance by the appropriate Division Head and the Office of Advancement.  All items (baseball caps, tee shirts, uniforms, literature, invitations, handbooks, pamphlets, etc.) featuring the name, initials or logo of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, must be approved by the Office of Advancement prior to the order being placed.

Applications are to be completed at least two weeks in advance for each activity and must be filed on an annual basis, including previous or recurring events, with the Director of Advancement before solicitation commences or orders for printing of materials are placed.   To receive a list of official NSA approved colors and logos or to obtain a copy of the Fundraising, Marketing and Advertising Request Form, please contact the Office of Advancement at 539-8789 ext. 3234. The Fundraising, Marketing and Advertising Request Form is also attached below.

Thank you for your support and Live Generously today!

What is the Fleur-de-Lis Society and How Do I Become a Member?

The Fleur-de-Lis Society, named for the school's emblem, salutes alumni, parents, past parents, grandparents, corporations, foundations and friends who provide leadership gifts to the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Annual Fund.

Donors Qualify for membership by contributing $1,000 or more to the NSA Annual Fund during the fiscal year (July 1st- June 30th). Each year members of the Fleur-de-Lis Society will be invited to attend a dinner held in the spring of each year. Additionally, members will be recognized in the school's publication Fleur-de-Lis. Donors who have made cumulative gifts to NSA through out the years totaling over $10,000 are recognized on our cumulative giving plaque in the Upper School foyer.

Saints Society

Legacy giving provides an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift. Planned gifts may be made through a will or trust and enable you to make a major gift to NSA while preserving your assets during your lifetime. A gift through your estate can provide significant support to the Academy and, at the same time, reduce your estate tax liability. Methods of planned giving may be tailored to suit your needs and giving may include trusts, life insurance, real estate, charitable trusts, bequests or retirement plan assets.

Established in 1996, the Saints Society recognizes those donors who make a commitment to the future of NSA by including the school in their estate plans or other planned gifts. Membership may be held anonymously and is not contingent upon the size or structure of the gift.

If you have any questions or if you need any additional information, please contact the Director of Development, Kenda Council '91 at (757) 539-8789 x3339.

Other Types of Giving

Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of an individual. Opportunities are also available for named gifts or special memorials to honor a family member, friend or loved one. Special gifts, donations directed toward a particular program or need, and gifts- in- kind are also accepted.

We also offer Monogrammed Brick Pavers in front of the Upper School Library/Media Center or in front of the Middle School.

Many companies will "match" a current or retired employee's contribution to a non-profit organization. By taking advantage of your company's matching gift benefit, your donation could be doubled! Some examples of matching gift companies are: SunTrust, Bank of America, Virginia Power, Wachovia, Northrop Grumman and International Paper. Please check with your employer to learn if your company supports matching gifts and to obtain the appropriate paperwork to submit with your gift.

The purpose of a Capital Campaign is to fund building improvements at NSA. NSA's last campaign, entitled "NSA-Forging the Future," raised over $2.7 million- the largest campaign in the school's history. This campaign has allowed NSA to build a new 24,000 square foot Lower School building for grades 5-7, modify the existing Lower School building, and renovate and relocate the Upper School library/media center and science complex.

Stocks or Cash:
Gifts of cash provide income tax benefits if you itemize your deductions. A gift of appreciated securities will allow you to receive a deduction for the full market value and avoid a capital gain tax liability.

All gifts to NSA are tax-deductible and are acknowledged through the Office of Development & Marketing. For additional information on any of the Ways of Giving, please contact the Director of Development, Kenda Council '91, at (757) 539-8789 x3339 .
