Students are expected to participate in all performances. As a student missing a performance may have a significant impact on the quality of the performance, I request that parents notify me as early as possible if a conflict comes up. I understand that conflicts will occasionally arise and there is no penalty for a missed performance.
Dress for evening performances is “concert black”: black slacks, white shirts for boys; black gown/black pants, white blouse for girls. There is no dress code for in school performances.
Jazz Band will wear all black for performances.

IAJE Jazz Band Festival
I would like to have the jazz band perform in this event which takes place in mid-May. In recent years, conflicts with rehearsals and after school sports have left us unable to adequately prepare for this festival. My hope is that moving rehearsals to Mondays will improve the situation.
Bands from grades four, five, six, seven/eight combined, and jazz band.

RE: Instrumental Demonstration and Rental for beginning band
On September 4th, during the school day, representatives of the French Music Co., of Westboro will visit the Sawyer School to demonstrate musical instruments to all 4th graders.
Students were shown and may choose to participate in the band program on the following instruments: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. Percussion will be offered on a limited basis. Anyone interested in playing percussion must speak with Mr. Kelly before signing up for percussion class.
Instruments and rental information (prices, terms) will be supplied by French Music Co. at a night meeting for parents/guardians and students on September 15th, at 6:30 pm in the Sawyer auditorium. Students will receive their instruments at this meeting. You are not obligated to obtain your instrument from French Music Co.; they are simply a company that I trust and with which I have a strong working relationship. If you would like you child to participate but are unable to attend the rental night meeting on the 15th please call me at 978 870 9198 (cell) or e mail firstname.lastname@example.org to make arrangements.
As with many tools, the “cut rate” variety of band instrument should be regarded with caution. Often, the student finds they pay the true price later when they are forced to work twice as hard merely to make up for their low-quality instruments’ low level of “playability”. Therefore, I strongly recommend against the purchase of instruments from discount department stores and eBay. For a detailed explanation please speak with me in person.
Instrumental lessons will be given in like instrument settings and will be scheduled either after school or within the school day on “A day” and “D day”. Lessons will begin Wednesday, September 16th. “Full band” rehearsals will begin at some point after February vacation. The instruments slated for “after school” scheduling are flute (Tuesday), trumpet (Wednesday), trombone (Thursday), and percussion (Friday). Therefore, students playing these instruments will need a ride home between 4:00 and 4:10 on lesson days.
Clarinet classes will be scheduled during the school day from 10:40 to 11:25 on “A” day.
Alto saxophone classes will be scheduled during the school day from 10:40 to 11:25 on “D” day.
All classes will take place in the Sawyer school band room. Parents picking up students from after school lessons may park outside the Sawyer band room on the south (gymnasium) side of the Sawyer school.
Should you have any questions, please contact me. I look forward to working with your children and having a wonderful year of instrumental music.

Parents of incoming fourth grade/beginning band students may contact me via text or call to my cell phone at 978 870 9198. As there is a significant amount of communication taking place as the fourth grade band is getting started I find phone and text conversations to be efficient.
