BTS: Love Yourself: Her

(From Left to Right, Jimin, V, Rap Monster, Suga, Jungkook, J-Hope, and Jin.)

The chances are high that either you or at least one of your friends has an extensive playlist of South Korean pop music, a.k.a kpop. Korea has been taking the music and pop culture scene by storm, especially in the 21st century. From PSY to Girls Generation, you have likely heard at least a few kpop songs.

As of recent, you probably have heard of the boy group BTS. They are the first kpop group to win a Billboard Music Award for Top Social Artist, beating out western acts such as Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and Shawn Mendes. Blazing a trail for many other international acts in the future.

September 18th, 2017, 2 AM PST, 6 PM KTZ, this group dropped their most recent music video “DNA” and mini-album. This spunky 90s nostalgia aesthetic contrasts with many of their past videos, in which they repeatedly come back with new “concepts” and settings.

The group consists of Kim Namjoon (Rap Monster), Kim Seokjin (Jin), Min Yoongi (Suga), Jung Hoseok (J-Hope), Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung (V), and Jeon Jungkook. I’ll even add reccomendations to get to know their vocals individually.

Kim Namjoon, better known my his stage name “Rap Monster” is a rapper from South Korea. Known for his aggressive rapping style and adorable dimples. He has an IQ of 148 and is very sweet person. ( Do You.)

This cutie is Kim Seokjin, or simply known as Jin. He is the oldest of the group, and is known for his lack of lines in songs, though his powerful voice deserves much more time in songs. He loves food, the color pink, and Mario. He also has extremely broad shoulders. (Awake.)

My personal favorite, Min Yoongi aka Suga (pronounced like sugar.) or Agust D. A talented rapper who also produces many of the group’s tracks. Known for being open about his struggles with mental illness in his solo mixtape, and being extremely tired all the time. Nicknamed grandpa. Originally did not want to be in an idol group, but has grown to love his friends very much. (Agust D.)

Jung Hoseok, or J-Hope, is such a talented dancer, many fans often are convinced he has no bones. He is known as the sunshine boy of the group, and is very silly and loud. He didn’t know how to rap before BTS, but now he raps alongside pros like Yoongi and Namjoon with ease. (Mama.)

Park Jimin has one of the cutest noses in the world, and definitely some of the most powerful vocals. Jimin is the group’s master of high notes, and he loves attention and cats as well. It may be a common thing for him to flip his clothes off of his shoulder, as done in Blood, Sweat, and Tears and the newest video, DNA. (Lie.)

Here’s the last Kim on the list! Kim Taehyung. Better known by his stage name V. He is one of the lead vocalists of BTS, known for his low range and silly antics. His voice is deep and beautiful, and he’s the second youngest of the group. He has the first lines in the new song (other than Jungkooks whistling.) (Stigma.)

Last, but by all means not least, we have Jeon Jungkook. He is known by kpop fans as “The Golden Maknae” because of his excellent performance in dance, song, and rap, despite being the youngest of the group (maknae). Though he doesn’t rap very much anymore, you will find that in their older tracks. He has a whisper-singing voice that he utilizes in covering songs by his favorite artists. The most notable being Justin Bieber, Troye Sivan and Charlie Puth. (His 2U cover.)

If you want a place to start your kpop journey, BTS is highly recommended. Talented acts, smart minds, enjoyable people, and contagious love will certainly reel you in.
