What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word fanfiction? For me I think of laughter, comfort, sadness, and feels (when I feel so much that I can’t identify what emotion I am feeling). Most people I talk to ask me what fanfiction is, and my explanation is that is is a short story, one shot (one chapter), or book that takes a book, tv series, movie or anime and changes something. In fanfiction you can kill off the main character (not recommended), make them another gender, have them turn evil, really anything that you want to happen.

There are hundreds of different fandoms considering that you can take your favorite book, tv show, movie, anime and anything else and write about it. Being a fan of any of these things makes you part of a fandom (the state or condition of being a fan of someone or something). My fandoms are the following--e warned, it’s a Long List--Arrow, Avengers, Burn Notice, Bones, Being Human, Criminal Minds, Daredevil, Flash, Harry Potter, House, M.D., Leverage, Lie to Me, Lucifer, Merlin, Maximum Ride, MacGyver, NCIS, Originals, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, RWBY, Secret Circle, Shadowhunters, Slugterra, Smallville, Tomorrow People, Twilight, Teen Wolf, Vampire Diaries, and White Collar.

Crossovers are a type of fanfiction, they consist of two fandoms that are meshed together. For example, there are fanfictions where Percy Jackson is the grandson of Voldemort is a crossover that I have read multiple times. Another example of a crossover is A Rose Among Thorns by mario mm, it is about a female Harry Potter moving to Mystic Falls and meeting the original hybrid later falling in love with him. It’s one of my favorite crossovers to date and trust me I have read a lot. the sad thing is that is hasn’t been updated since October 16th, 2013.

If you are wondering where you can read fanfictions, there are a few different websites and apps. The ones I use the most are Wattpad,, and Archive of Our Own(AO3), these sites all have apps that you can download from google play and I know the Wattpad it on the apple app store but I don’t know about FanFiction.Net or Archive of Our Own.

POVs, or point of views, are points in a book or fanfiction where the person talking, thinking, or explaining changes. In fanfictions if the point of view changes, most authors will put a POV change title-thing on top, for example: Mars POV. It helps keep readers from getting confused about who is talking especially if there are more than one POVs in a chapter.

OCs, or original characters, are characters that you create and put into a fanfiction. For example I am currently writing multiple fanfictions that revolve around the OCs that I put in them. one of the main character’s siblings is an OC and I am working on building the storyline from the ground up to integrate my OCs into the plot.

Canon is where, say in the original context of a TV show the main character ends up with their best friend who they have know for years, if in a fanfiction you allow those characters to end up together still that's canon. Or how Fan Fiction Terms Glossary likes to put it, in short, "canon" in the context of fan fiction is both the accepted "official" material itself, and a concept or detail promoted by the original work and/or in accepted "official" material.

AUs, or Alternate Universes, can be posed as a what if question. What if Dean Winchester was actually a werewolf? What if Harry Potter didn’t grow up with the Dursleys? What if Sirius Black never went to Azkaban? It’s like a story made from a what if question. The story and plot line might be completely different from the original material or very similar.

One-shots can be the shortest fanfictions you have read or the longest. It is a fanfiction that is told in only one chapter. I have written an original one-shot and I find it hard to fit that much detail into one chapter sometimes. I commend people who can do it and do it well.

Ship/Slashes are relationships or couples that you want to happen. It does not always mean a romantic relationship either. or example: ship Harry Potter/Severus Snape in a father/son or mentor/student kinda way. I mean that sometimes I on occasion look up fanfictions where Snape is actually Harry’s father and raises him instead of the Dursleys. Okay so I actually read a lot of those.
