Course Syllabus

Welcome to Yellow 7.  My name is Mr. Krengel and I am happy to be your 7th grade math teacher. I am looking forward to getting to know you and to working with you. This handout will give you information to guide you to success in this class.

This course is required of all students in grade 7.  Emphasis is on developing proficiency with concepts and skills in Ratios & Proportional Relationships; The Number System; Expressions & Equations; Statistics & Probability; and Geometry.  Learning in these areas will support the development of student proficiency in all of the grade 6 to 8 benchmarks of the Common Core State Standards. Students will be assessed on these benchmarks.

The amount of time spent on each benchmark will vary depending on the complexity of the topic.  Instructional activities will consist of group and individual tasks in class and homework assignments, including projects, worksheets, textbook assignments, etc.

Student assessment will consist of written formative and summative assessments. Other forms of student assessment could be the completion of homework and class assignments and class participation.

Grades will be based on your grasp of the benchmarks. This will be obtained in the following manner:

 40% summative assessments 50% formative assessments 10% classwork and homework

If a score of less than 80% (proficient) is earned on a formative quiz, a retake will be offered during recess, lunch, or after school (if arranged) to attempt to earn up to an 80%.

The following Mathematical Response Rubric will be used in conjuncture with the rubric designed for each benchmark to determine one's score.

 RESPONSE WORK WHY (Explanation) 4 The response shows a complete understanding of the benchmark. Computations and other procedures are complete and accurate. Reasoning is logical and conclusions are clearly communicated and justified. 3 The response shows a mostly complete understanding of the benchmark. Computations and other procedures are mostly complete and largely accurate. Reasoning is mostly logical, and conclusions are adequately communicated and justified. 2 The response shows a partial understanding of the benchmark. Computations and other procedures are partially complete and somewhat accurate. Reasoning contains some flaws, and there are some significant errors in the way conclusions are communicated and justified. 1 The response shows a minimal or no understanding of the benchmark. Computations and other procedures are largely incomplete, missing, or inaccurate. Reasoning is relevant to the item but contains numerous flaws, and there are many significant errors in the way conclusions are communicated and justified.

 A Advanced average mathematical response score is 4 translated to 90-100% B Proficient average mathematical response score is 3 translated to 80-89% C Partially Proficient average mathematical response score is 2 translated to 70-79% D Novice average mathematical response score is 1 translated to 60-69% F Well Below Proficiency average mathematical response score is less than 1 translated to less than 60%
