Here you will find general information about my class, announcements and other helpful and educational links.

What We've Been Up To In Class:
Mr. Perry's Language Arts classes have been very busy lately.  Students have completed the novel Scorpions by the late, great Walter Dean Myers.  Students have also been reading independently while completing a variety of written-response questions highlighting literary terms and ideas such as plot, protagonist, antagonist, theme, conflict, etc.  Mr. Perry's Language Arts students have also been utilizing the Pearson Anthology's short stories to gain a better understanding of the different types of literature and their accompanying themes and terms.  Lastly, students are just beginning a persuasive writing unit where they will strengthen their writing skills by exploring both sides of high-interest topics, editing and writing persuasive essays supporting their viewpoints and presenting their work to their peers.
Mr. Perry's "Book of the Month"

The Living by Matt de la Pena:

"First comes the storm.  Then comes the wave.  And when the ship starts going down, there's just the wide-open sea...and the terror."

The Living has it all:  action, adventure, romance, mystery and science-fiction.  I couldn't put it down!  Shy, the protagonist, takes a summer job on a luxury cruise ship to make some money.  He'll rake in the tips and be able to help his mom with the  bills.  But then a massive earthquake hits California and Shy's life is changed forever.  The earthquake is only the beginning.  Twenty-four hours and a catastrophic chain of events later, Shy is lost at sea, fighting to survive - and stuck with her.

This book is a page-turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat.  I wouldn't be surprised to see this novel made into a feature film.
