Welcome to the 2018-19 school year!

Back to School

As summer comes to an end, I am looking forward to your arrival at the middle school for a new, exciting, and successful year. My goal is to help you make a smooth transition into your new grade level. I will be adding to this website throughout the school year, so please check in for up-dates and additions.

Mathematics
Northwood School adopted a new comprehensive math program for middle school.  Big Ideas Math is a complete middle school math program developed  with rigorous mathematical content and practices as its foundation.  Students gain a deeper understanding of math concepts by narrowing their focus to fewer topics at each grade level.  Students master content through inductive reasoning opportunities, engaging activities that provide deeper understanding, concise examples, rich thought-provoking exercises, and a continual building on what has been previously taught.
Each student will receive a username and password which will allow you and your child to view the textbook and the record and practice journal.  It also allows you to be able to view a tutorial video of every example in every section in the book.  You can also print out any page in the record and practice journal.  Tour the website to see all it has to offer.

This course is designed to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become safe, low-risk, responsible drivers. The classroom instruction will provide knowledge which is the foundation for becoming a safe driver. The behind-the-wheel instruction allows for the application of the classroom knowledge through on the road lessons.

Wisconsin state law requires a minimum of 30 classroom hours. This attendance is mandatory to meet state requirements. In addition, the law requires 6 behind-the-wheel hours and 6 observation hours with a certified driving instructor. The fee for behind-the-wheel is $175 and must be paid before the first behind-the-wheel lesson. Behind-the-wheel lessons will only be scheduled for students with passing grades in all classes. Parental involvement plays an important role. An effective mentor can make a significant difference in your behind-the- wheel experience.

The Read 180 model gets students reading, writing, speaking, and thinking critically every day.  It is based on 15 years of research and provides flexible instruction.

3.  Small Group Instruction - Students receive individualized, data-driven instruction that meets their unique learning needs while building meaningful relationships with their teacher and group members.
4.  Independent Reading - Students engage with complex, content-rich literature and informational texts that they can read with success and apply their newly acquired vocabulary and comprehension skills.
