Dear NS community

Wow, what a night!  We had 323 Father/Father Figures and Daughters attend our first Daddy Daughter Dance on Saturday!  It was a night to remember!  Memories were created that will last a lifetime. I’m happy to report that the event raised $4,493 towards the Sports Complex and Playground Campaign.  This makes our total raised for Phase I $167,914!

A message shared that evening from our NS Administrators, Shay, Sheri and Melissa:

“We are so passionate about our new sports and fitness complex. This spectacular facility will benefit many k-12 students for years to come both during and after school hours.

Research shows the power movement has on long-term healthy minds and bodies. The direct correlation between being active and increased academic achievement is too strong to ignore. It is time to move fitness forward at North Star and create an atmosphere that will encourage high achievement for the whole child. Thank you to all who have donated so far and to those who still plan to donate!”

A message shared that evening from the campaign Chair and NS Dad, Blake Hansen:

We ask our children to do hard things, to reach for the stars, to be their best selves.  We’ve chosen a school like North Star that asks the same of them every day in the classroom.  Now it is our turn to show them how we embrace something hard - raising $250-$300K for Phase I and ultimately $2million for the entire campaign.  It’s going to take everyone getting involved.  Let’s stretch ourselves to make a gift that is meaningful to your family.

We trust the vision and direction the leaders of our wonderful school have given us.  Let’s make this happen for North Star and show our children what is possible when we come together to build something that will not only impact their lives, but generations of students who walk through these doors.

Time to show what we know and what we can do!

Dear Parent/Guardian of Hard-Working Huskie Students,

      In the coming months, Idaho will administer the Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) by Smarter Balanced ® in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. This test was first administrated in 2015 and replaced the previous ISAT. It matches the content and skills outlined in the standards that guide instruction in the classroom and provide valuable information about student learning. We are committed to providing accurate information to parents and families in our community, as well as clarifying any misconceptions about the value of student participation in statewide assessments.

     The test provides a deeper level of information about student progress than previous tests, which makes them a valuable instructional tool. This helps to identify the areas in each subject where a student needs additional support and where he or she has mastered the content and can be challenged to go deeper into the subject matter¾information that is useful for parents, teachers, students, and school administrators.

     As a parent, you can use the information from the test to help support your child at home and guide a discussion with their child’s teacher to identify what, if any, additional support is necessary in school. Teachers use the information to guide their instruction and provide more personalized activities and learning opportunities for students. Students can work on the areas where they need improvement to ensure they are staying on track to be successful in the next grade level. In areas where students excel, teachers can provide appropriately challenging work to ensure they continue to be engaged and advance their knowledge.

     While no single test can give a complete picture of achievement, when combined with student grades and teacher reports, it can provide important information about student progress. With this year’s scores, you will be able to compare your child’s performance to last year’s and see the progress over time. In addition, the Smarter Balanced test is the best way to ensure that traditionally underserved students—those receiving special education or English as a Second Language services, low-income, and minority students—are not overlooked.

     Both the Idaho State Department of Education and our district are working to reduce the number of assessments students take at the state and district level to ensure that test provide meaningful information for teachers, students and parents.

     When a student does not participate in the annual state test, we all lose out on valuable information. We are committed to student achievement, and the test raises the bar for our students to ensure they are on the path to success. We are confident that with the quality instruction delivered by our dedicated educators and your support; our students can meet and exceed these expectations.

PTO Information

Host families wanted for Exchange Students 

North Star is the largest supporter of the foreign exchange student program in the valley. We are currently looking for great families that are willing to open their heart and home to an exchange student for the 2017-201school year.  
As a host family, you choose your student from a list of profiles based on your family's interests and activities.  The student lives in your home as a participating family member.  They are like a son or daughter to you.  Students help with household chores, attend school, and share their culture with you, while learning about our culture.  You provide the student with meals, a bed, and a nurturing environment.   Students receive a monthly allowance from their natural parents to pay for their own toiletries, personal needs, activities, school supplies, clothing and entertainment.  They also have insurance when they come to the United States. 

The program is very rewarding and offers an amazing experience for your family to learn about another culture, bring cultural awareness into your community and schools and to create lifelong friendship with a student and their family.  We provide quality support to both host families and students throughout the exchange.  Each month we organize activities in the community that the students can participate in with other students in the area.  Host families and siblings are invited to attend as well. 

The students arrive two weeks before school starts and leave at the beginning of June. In April we will be able to contact the students and get to know them before they arrive.

High School Students. Prom is just around the corner. Looking for an affordable clothing option, check out Cinderella's Closet at 5825 N. Glenwood (across from Hawks Stadium). They offer great deals on slightly used Tuxedoes and Dresses. They rent for $15.00 and this covers the cost of dry cleaning.

Students are encouraged to register for the college fair online to maximize your time at the fair and increase face-to-face interaction with admissions representatives. 

Middle School Information: 

Middle school basketball officially came to an end on Feb. 23rd.  Thanks to all of the fans and administrators for your support.  The 8th grade basketball season was very successful. The B squad went undefeated and the A squad finished with an overall record of 9 wins and 4 losses.  After a slow start the team won 8 straight and earned the opportunity to play for the 8th grade championship. They lost to a very good Cole Valley team, but this team is loaded with great kids and a ton of potential. I'm looking forward to their future success in the years to come. Elementary Information

Dear Parents,

Once again a unique opportunity has come our way.
Our 5th grade students have been asked to create a shadow play to the music of Disney's Sorcer's Apprentice from Fantasia.  Local jazz musicians Chuck Smith and Sandon Mayhew are re-writing the music to give it a jazz spin.  This will be performed on Sat. May 6th at South Jr. High in Boise for the 99th celebration of "Boise Music Week".  
It is the tradition of Boise Music Week to provide various music and arts concerts that are free and open to the public during this week every year.  While this event will be free, advance tickets will need to be ordered for those wishing to attend.  Those are not yet available but I will let you know as soon as they are.
While not all students can be a part of the shadow play, all 5th grade students are invited to participate since there will a little "singing", light effects, and "other surprise" activities at the end of the Apprentice number.  
We will prepare for this performance during music class and it will be a great opportunity for more creative collaboration with each other.  
Student's may need to be available all afternoon on May 6th as we are uncertain how much set up and rehearsal time it will require that day (It will depend on their role).
What students wear that night will depend on what we do with costuming and roles but for most students will be playing "brooms", and it will likely require brown pants and long sleeve brown shirts or something similar.
We will need a good support system of parent help that day as well.  If you can make yourself available that day to help pull off this exciting event, please let Mrs. Van Paepeghem know at svp@northstarcharter.org.
