Parents & Students,

Welcome to 5th grade science!  I am looking forward to a great year with each of the 5th grade students.  Science class is filled with hands-on activities, discovery-based learning, collaborating with peers, and engaging learning opportunities.  Students will work with a lab partner or group to complete different activities throughout the year.  We will cover all areas of science this year including physical, Earth & space and life science.

Students miss vital information when they are not in class each day.  Of course, if your child is sick, then she/he should stay home.  However, attendance is imperative.  If your child must be absent and you can inform me before it occurs, please do.  I will prepare assignments in advance.  If you cannot inform me of an absence ahead of time, homework can be prepared on the day of the absence and sent to the office for pick up.

Parent and school communication is very important.  Parents can stay involved in their student's academic life in a variety of ways.

    1. Create a profile to log on to the Parent Portal.  If you need a form to sign up for a username and password, please pick one up in the school office.

    2. Confirm that your child has her/his planner each night, and see that they have completed their homework.  If possible, check their homework and address any mistakes.

    3. Communicate with your child's teachers.  If your child brings anything to your attention that I should know regarding their classroom experience, please let me know.  Please know that the best way to reach me is via email at smysel@norridge80.net.

    4. Come to parent/teacher conferences.  Conferences are held for two nights in November and February.

Again, I look forward to a great year.  Please do not hesitate to contact me.
