What is Partial Immersion
Immersion is a method of foreign language instruction in which the regular curriculum is taught in another language.  The new language is the vehicle for content instruction rather than the focus of instruction.   In partial immersion programs half of the day is spent learning regular grade-content curriculum in the target language and the other half in English.

Why French?
Norman Public Schools has chosen French for the partial immersion program as a result of collaboration with the University of Oklahoma's College of Education.  The College of Education has a newly formed partnership with the Université de Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens, France.  With this French connection the College of Education is supporting the district in preparing highly qualified teachers for the immersion program.
Additionally, French is one of the world's major languages, spoken by over 125 million people on five continents.  French is the most widely taught second language after English in the world.

Benefits of an Early Start
Research has shown numerous benefits for beginning the language learning process at a young age.
  • increased language capacity
  • improved listening skills
  • stronger problem-solving and creative thinking skills
  • high level of language proficiency when same language pursued for a number of years
  • enhanced awareness of the global community

Partial Immersion Model for Norman Public Schools

Students in the French Partial Immersion Elementary Program spend half their day learning math and science in French.  The other half of the day they receive instruction in English for social studies and literacy.  Immersion students have interaction with their grade-level peers at lunch and recess and have normal involvement in PE and music classes as well as other school activities.  This 50/50 structure will follow them through grade 5.

Program Goals
  • to develop communicative and academic proficiency in French and in English
  • to help students succeed academically in all subject areas at levels comparable to those they would have reached if they had been instructed only in English
  • to develop understanding and appreciation of other cultures

Program Enrollment

For the 2014-2015 school year there will be 26 available spaces in Kindergarten.  13 spaces are reserved for students who reside in the Reagan attendance zone.  The other 13 spaces are for students who reside within the NPS boundaries but who have a different home school.  If the number of applicants exceeds space availability, seats will be awarded through a drawing.
