Plant breeding

Continuous attempts are made to introduce new cultivars from breeding programmes abroad. However, very few of these cultivars are adapted to the Nordic growing conditions. Many new foreign cultivars are also being produced only under the ‘club varieties’ concept and may be inaccessible to Nordic growers. Therefore, Nordic breeding and selection is important for a sufficient supply of new cultivars for Nordic fruit growers. A first step towards developing such cultivars is to analyse the resistance in existing cultivars that are reasonably well adapted to Nordic growing conditions. This resistance can then be used in breeding programs.
