"...students should be given opportunities to learn how to care for themselves, for other human beings, for the natural and human-made worlds, and for the world of ideas. This learning to care requires significant knowledge; it defines genuine education." Nel Noddings
A seven week (one hour/week) workshop that pairs trained college and community mentors with small tables of three or four High School freshmen. Together they explore the advantages of, and strategies for, recruiting more caring adults into their social networks.
Here is a flier that may introduce students, families, and teachers to our goals and rough content.
Below is a weekly schedule of topics, with links to instruments that we use to build vocabulary and spark discussion.
Week 1: Introductions. Take and Collect PrePost Survey, What is a Mentor? Draw individual maps of network of caring adults.
Week 2: Fill out questionnaire of Possible Selves, and discuss which adults are going to help you be your best PS and avoid your worst PS.
Week 3: Why and How to expand your social network.
Week 4: Complete and discuss the Social Capital questionnaire.
Week 5: Complete and discuss the survey of 40 Developmental Assets
Week 6: Celebrate shared assets and discuss how they came to be, how they can be sustained, and how missing ones may be obtained.
Week 7: Complete and discuss the Purpose in Life survey.
Sessions are typically co-led by Northern Professor Steve Cox and the Classroom Teacher following this Weekly Discussion Plan
This workshop is based on the research paper “I didn't know you could just ask:” Empowering underrepresented college-bound students to recruit academic and career mentors
