An Alliance between Española Public Schools, MATCH New Mexico and Northern New Mexico College to support families and teachers in strengthening the reading skills of our valley's 3rd graders.

Job Description: Serve as a reading mentor for a 3rd or 4th grade student at Hernandez Elementary in an after-school program, 3-5pm, 2 days (MW or TR) per week for the entire semester. Mentors are paid $10/hour. Enroll in ENGR/BIOL 399, Mentoring and Leadership Seminar. This one credit course, offered Fridays 4-5pm, will provide you with mentoring and leadership skills and give you an opportunity to reflect on your ongoing mentoring with your cohort of fellow mentors.

Duties and Responsibilities: The typical mentoring session consists of
0. Arrive at Hernandez Elementary prior to 3pm prepared to devote your attention to a young person.
1. Greet your mentee and the rest of group including the onsite facilitator.
2. Wash hands and have snack.
3. Physical activity.
4. Mentee’s choice of finishing school work together or reading to each other.
5. Play a game.
6. More reading and writing. 
7. Activity, student choice.
8. Clean up, make plans for next meeting, say good-byes.
