Character Education

New Kent adopted the Character Counts! program as their county-wide character education program. This program focuses on educating children on six pillars: respect, responsibility, caring, trustworthiness, citizenship, and fairness in order to develop their character. At GWES, we will be learning about a different character trait each month and ways we can demonstrate that trait.

GWES will be using this program in conjunction with the award winning children's book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. The popular book is all about the idea that everyone carries an invisible bucket that is meant to hold your good thoughts and feelings about yourself. We are happy when they are full and sad and lonely when they are empty. Our buckets get filled when we do kind things for others as well as when others do kind things for us. We are challenging the students of GWES to fill each others' buckets this year. Students can do this by saying "Hi" to each other, asking a student to play with them at recess, or even just smiling at another student.

Below are the Character Counts! and Bucket Fillers Inc. websites, if you would like more information on these programs.
