The New Kent Middle School Band Program has three primary performance ensembles- the Advanced Band, Intermediate Band, and Beginning Band. Other extracurricular band activities include pep band, jazz band, and chamber music club. Students can also participate in activities such as Area Band, District Band, the NKMS school musical, and a variety of community performances.
Olivia Stansbury is the Director of Bands at New Kent Middle School. She is a graduate of Virginia Tech, where she received both the Master's of Arts in Education and the Bachelor's of Arts in Music Education and Flute Performance. She has studied conducting with Virginia Tech professors Dr. Travis Cross and Dr. Andrew Putnam, and studied flute with Virginia Tech professors Mrs. Elizabeth Crone and Dr. David Jacobsen, along with local Newport News teacher Mrs. Caroline Cale. She has also participated in masterclasses with numerous flautists including the internationally renowned James Galway, Julliard’s professor of flute Carol Wincenc, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal flautist Mathieu Dufour. Two of her most notable teaching experiences before coming to New Kent included spending a year working with the Cave Spring Middle School Band in Roanoke, VA, and spending two years on staff at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI. Outside of school, Ms. Stansbury enjoys playing her flute with the Fantasia Flute Choir in Williamsburg and spending time with her family.
