My name is Donna Rogers and I will be your child's math 8 and Algebra teacher.  I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a minor in mathematics. This is my 35th year of teaching middle school math in Northside ISD.

My goal is to truly know your child well and use this knowledge to guide, support and motivate him or her. I believe that every child can be successful in my class.  I value parent involvement at every level and encourage you to partner with me to give your child the most powerful and joyous learning experience possible.  I am looking forward to an exciting year of being your child's teacher!!

Organization is the key to success!

Success in this class has several steps.  The first step involves being prepared with the proper supplies.  Here is a list of supplies that your child will need in class.  All other supplies will be provided.

1.    Spiral/Composition Notebook

2.    Pencils (#2) /Pencil sharpener

3.    Erasers

4.    Colored pencils

A spiral/composition notebook will be used for all class notes/warm ups/vocabulary/assignments.  This interactive notebook is to be brought to class daily.  All work will be placed in the notebook.

Practice is one of the keys to success!  Students will be given the daily assignments to practice the skill taught.  Homework will be graded the next day and a homework quiz will be given to determine the student's knowledge.

Tests will be administered weekly to determine the progress of student learning.  If your child is still struggling with a particular concept, a reteach will be given every Friday, with the opportunity to retest to improve his/her test score.

Grading Policy:

The six weeks averages will be calculated using the following weights:

                        Assessments – 60%       Daily 40%

All 8th grade math students will be using a consumable workbook which will stay in the classroom. Algebra students will be issued a book to take home and will use a class set of books.   Both the 8th grade and Algebra student books are available online.

All 8th grade math students will be taking the STAAR math test. Students must pass the test in order to be promoted to high school.  8th grade students will be allowed to use a calculator on the test.  NISD has purchased TI Nspire calculators for every 8th grade and Algebra teacher to have a class set.  Students will be able to use the calculator daily in class.

Algebra students will not take the 8th grade STAAR math test.  They will take an Algebra End of Course exam.  Students will need to pass this test in order to receive credit for the course.  Algebra students must also take 2 semester exams.
