About Us

We are a non-profit organization registered with the State of South Dakota to promote understanding and cultural exchange between our hometown of Rapid City and Nikko City, Japan.  The organization is run by a group of citizen volunteers who act as an executive board and has a diverse membership group.  Members come primarily from Rapid City but also include other cities in the Black Hills Region.

Sister City programs bring diverse cultures together. Rapid City has been honored to be selected as a sister city to both Nikko City, Japan and Apolda, Germany.

In November 1994, the cities of Rapid City, South Dakota, USA and Imaichi, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan pledged to further exchanges in education, culture, sports and economics.

In 2006, five adjacent cities and villages (including Imaichi City) were joined into a single municipality as a cost-saving measure and adopted the name of the most well known city and became Nikko City. Today, members from both cities forge strong friendships and expand their cultural understanding through a variety of exchange programs.
