October 2015
Dear Families,

We are off to a great start for the 2015-2016 school year!

My hope is that you are receiving my e-mails that are meant to keep you informed of events and activities happening in and around AMS. If, for some reason you are not receiving my e-mails, please e-mail me directly and let me know. I will make sure your contact information is updated in our student information system.

If your family qualifies for Free and Reduced Lunch, please make sure that you have turned in your yearly application by October 8th. Free and Reduced lunch applications must be turned in updated each year. A new application should have been mailed home to you. You can feel free to return these to the AMS office. If you need assistance, Kid Zone is willing to help any family who needs assistance to ensure the form is filled out correctly. Please feel free to contact Kid Zone at (510) 476-2770.

I would like to thank all the families that came out for Back to School night. We had a great showing and I hope those of you who were able to attend enjoyed meeting your child's teachers. We hope you have a good understanding of how to stay in touch with the teachers and what your child will be learning this year.

We have quite a few things happening this month. Please read below for these dates:
  • October 2: 6th Grade Social 3pm to 5pm
  • October 6: 8th Grade Annual PBL College Fair (@MPR)
  • October 8: 6th Grade Parent Night with the Counselors
  • October 22: GREAT SHAKE OUT!
  • October 22: School Site Council Meeting, 6pm to 7pm (@MPR)
  • October 23: Itliong-Vera Cruz EducationDay
  • October 30: Fall Carnival
Please note that students are not allowed to be on other school campuses. Students should only be on their assigned school campus, and this would apply especially when AMS students have an early dismissal time.

We ask that parents do not use the staff parking lot for drop-off and pick-up. This is a staff area only. Parents should refrain from entering AMS from the back from Fredi street and driving the wrong way onto campus. This is creating an unsafe environment for our students and people driving the wrong way could potentially cause accidents. We appreciate your help with creating the safest school possible for our kids!

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. Have a great month!

AMC 8 and Math Olympiad coming up in November & December
The AMC8 (American Math Competition) is being held on Tuesday, November 17th. This is a very pretigious and challenging test that is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. $10 per person per exam.

The Math Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Students (MOEMS) will be available for 6th graders. There are five tests to be completed on five different dates starting on Tuesday, November 17th. There is a $5-10 per person fee depending on the number of participants. Space is limited to 30 per test. An accurate count is needed before Wednesday, October 7th.

Please e-mail amsmathtest@gmail.com if you are interested.

The planning committee is hard at work on these events surrounding the dedication ceremony for Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School. The dedication ceremony will be held on December 18th. Times are still being finalized.
Please note that we will have a minimum day schedule, releasing students at 11:42 AM. The ceremony will begin approximately at 1:00 PM.

Itliong-Vera Cruz Education Day
As you may be aware, the Governor of California has approved October 25th as Larry Itliong Day. In honor of Larry Itliong we will substitute all regular curriculum by doing various activities and lessons around the work of the UFW, the Delano Grape Strikes, Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz and Cesar Chavez. We are taking this time to educate our students about a critical movement in US History that had a direct effect on Union City and farm workers across the country.

Please make sure you have your child's log-in information for their various school accounts. By having your child's e-mail and password, you can monitor the e-mails they are sending and receiving. One way to ensure your child is not being bullied or doing anything inappropriate is to regularly monitor their online activities.

By having access to your child's e-mail account, you can check the Google Classrooms for those teachers that are utilizing this program. You would be able to see a live update of any assignments or projects your child is assigned. You can also log-in to your child's Student Connect account to see their grades and any missing assignments.

Feel free to contact AMS to get help accessing any of these accounts.
