Through a partnership with New Hanover County Schools, Wilmington Health Access for Teens (WHAT) is proud to provide on-site primary physical, mental and nutrition health services to students at Ashley, Laney and New Hanover High School Wellness Centers - school-based health centers uniting education and health for success in the classroom and life.
Each Wellness Center is staffed with highly-skilled licensed providers including a nurse practitioner or physician assistant, a registered nurse, a licensed clinical social worker or licensed psychological associate, and a medical office assistant.  A registered dietitian is also on-site one day per week.

Similar to a regular doctor's office, the Wellness Center offer access to a full range of comprehensive health services including:
  • annual wellness exams
  • wellness physicals for sports, school and employment
  • vaccinations and immuzations
  • counseling
  • treatment for acute and chronic conditions (asthma)
  • screening and referral for dental and eye exams
  • health education, outreach and prevention programs
  • and so much more!
The Wellness Center is open every day school is in session for walk-in visits or by appointment.  Most major health insurance plans are accepted including Medicaid, NC Health Choice and private insurers.  Wellness Center staff will help you to determine what services may or may not be covered under your plan.  If you do not have health insurance, please ask for financial assistance counseling.  No student will be denied services.

If your child has his or her own physician, he or she can still receive services...we will work with the physician to meet your child's health care needs.  Referrals are made to other area health care providers as appropriate for the student's medical and mental health care needs.

Our staff look forward to serving the school community and developing a close working relationship with your family.  If you have any questions or need more information, please contact your Wellness Center -
