Karleigh Kolander wins Azalea Festival Poetry Contest!

The N.C. AzaleaFestival conducted an inaugural High School Writing Contest and students from New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick counties were invited to submit either a descriptive essay or poem on the following prompt: 


'How does the North Carolina Azalea Festival contribute to or enhance our community of Wilmington, NC?'

Laney's own Karleigh Kolander, a 9th grader was the grand prize Poetry winner for her poem, “Bloom,”.
Karleigh will receive a $200 cash prize and an Azalea Festival t-shirt. Way to go, Karleigh!

The following Laney students were finalists:

Poetry:
  • Cameron Jefferson and Ava John, “The Festival of Flowers” – Laney High School, 12th grade
Essay:
  • Abigail Batt, “Wilmington, NC Festival” – Laney High School, 10th grade
The Azalea Festival Committee recognized the winners of the Azalea Festival High School Writing Contest on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at the Port City Java Café in Barclay Commons, 

Each winner and finalist are invited to read their entry at the banquet and the entries will be published in the 2017 Azalea Festival Souvenir Book.
