Leaders at the Department of the Air Force, Headquarters AFJROTC, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, announced on May 12th, 2017 that Laney's AFJROTC was awarded the Distinguished Unit Award (DUA) for 2016-2017.  Typically, less than a third of units worldwide are awarded this top level award.

In order to receive the DUA, unit NC-802 was required to meet all headquarters tasking suspenses (deadlines), and average a minimum of 12 hours of community service per cadet. 125 cadets were enrolled during the fall and spring and completed over 1,525 hours of service.

The DUA recognizes the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, contributions of their instructors as mentors, and the support of school leaders and staff members as well as many within the local community. Numerous AFJROTC units are doing great things, and those recognized as distinguished units truly represent the best of the 897 AFJROTC units worldwide.

Congratulations to all of the cadets and to instructors Col (Ret) T. Harrison Smith, Jr. and MSgt (Ret) Bruce D. See for this great honor!
