NEW ATTENDANCE POLICY

In grades 9-12, a student who misses more than 10 days in a semester, shall not be awarded course credit except by determination of the principal/designee upon careful review of the student records with a panel of individuals to include the student, parent(s)/guardian(s), teacher(s) of course(s), and other appropriate support staff (i.e. EC Chair, MTSS Coordinator). Make up work shall be assigned by the student’s teacher as deemed appropriate. All make up work shall be completed within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the child’s teacher.

updated grading policy

*Q1/Q3: Parents of students whose final average is an F or an INC will be notified that their child will receive an academic contract. The academic contract will outline academic support and opportunities to allow the students to gain a greater understanding of missed skills and improve their academic performance.

After the parent, student, and teacher have agreed on an academic contract, the student will have two weeks to fulfill the requirements of the contract.

Once students fulfill the contract, within the two-week allotted period, the Q1/Q3 grade will be updated.

If a student fails to fulfill their academic contract they will receive the grade floor of an F, numerically presented as a 50.

All assignments in Q2/Q4 will appear in PowerSchool as a direct reflection of student performance (0-100%).

The final course grade will appear in PowerSchool as a direct reflection of student performance (0-100%).

What’s in this for you?

  • You will overcome your fear of speaking in front of peers.

  • You will get to know yourself and how you affect those around you, and how the world affects you.

  • You will “come out your shell”.

  • You will learn to accept the ideas of others.

You might even experience the thrill of your audience of peers genuinely applauding your performances, and if you are really effective, you might make people laugh and cry because you touched their hearts.

a few housekeeping rules

  1. Be in the right place at the right time.

  2. DON’T APPLY BODY SPRAY OR LOTION IN THIS ROOM…GO OUTSIDE AND DO IT.

  3. Keep your hands to yourself unless directed on stage not to do so.

  4. Don’t mess with other people’s stuff. Likewise, keep track of your own stuff.

  5. Be on time.

  6. Don’t abuse the bathroom pass privilege.

  7. Put your phones away. You don’t need your phone in this class.

  8. NO TALKING DURING A PERFORMANCE.

  9. There is a difference between bullying and an “oops, I’m sorry”.

  10. Learn not to take yourself so seriously…you will be miserable in this class if you are offended all the time.

About your teacher:

I have taught for 28 years. I have a background in radio broadcasting, as well as English education. I've taught high school English, Life Skills, Driver Education, and Theatre, and I served for several years as an athletic trainer. During my time as a theatre instructor, I've had the privilege to direct some of the finest young actors in over 30 full-length musicals and plays. I love watching students find their inner creativity, and then let it fly! My wife is also a teacher at Laney. In addition to my teaching at Laney, I am a professional story teller with the Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington. I am an avid historian, and I am a Disney fan and self-proclaimed resident of the Haunted Mansion.
