and Art 1: Beginning Art Class
Welcome to my Website! This website is always a work in progress:) ...hard to keep my hands clean long enough for daily updates, but I am super excited to start our new semester!
In Our Ceramic and Art Studio at Hoggard High School we take pride in developing skill in pottery and ceramic making, attentive to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, with an approach that allows students to disconnect from the ever-growing age of technology using a down-to-earth perspective.
You may find that working in clay in our Ceramics class and other art materials in Art 1, can enhance your capacity to maneuver through life's challenges in ways that are similar to problem solving in our Art studio.
Daily, students have the opportunity to develop skill for creating pottery and art through hands-on study.
Students learn to appreciate making projects that are both functional and aesthetic works of art.
...WHENEVER YOU FACE AN OBSTACLE, THERE IS ALWAYS A SOLUTION!
Our class Motto is one I hope you can learn to embrace with confidence and gratitude: Art and Ceramics: It Doesn't Get Easier, You Get Better
As we begin our new semester together, you can look forward to beginning your study of Ceramics with vocabulary relevant to hand building and wheel-throwing, where clay comes from, as well as the techniques used to create art through clay.
In Art 1, you can look forward to learning the basic building blocks of Art: Elements and Principles of Design. Canvas can be utilized if the need arises for us to transition to an online platform, but as for now we will learn through in-person hands-on study daily.
Attendance plays a paramount role in your progression in any pottery or art class, but especially ours as we move swiftly from concept to comprehension to production.
Here's how to be successful in our potteryand art classes: Be present and on time--accountable--responsible--cooperative--and find joy in your work!

WELCOME TO MY CERAMICS and ART1: BEGINNING ART CLASSES!
Our Ceramics course will introduce you to a functional, 3D art form that has been practiced for thousands of years. We will focus on techniques in building slab, coil method, pinch technique, throwing on the pottery wheel and sculpting. I am excited for you to embrace this ancient, yet modern art form.
Our Ceramics class is designed to reinforce and build upon knowledge and skills developed through the competency goals of our NC Essential Standards for Visual Arts. Students will build upon their cumulative knowledge and experiences in art in order to grow in their ability to describe, interpret, evaluate, respond, and produce. For this reason, Art 1/Beginning Art is a prerequisite for Ceramics.
Our Art 1: Beginning Art course will teach you the building blocks of art: The Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. Building on these concepts we will create exciting works of art using each of these components that are essential to any piece of art.
Lastly, Art experiences in both classes move from simple to complex...students have experiences in producing 2D and 3D works of art in clay using technique and processes learned within the classroom. Students' imaginations are challenged to foster reflective thinking and develop disciplined effort and problem solving skills. An understanding of the connection that the arts have to culture, history, and other disciplines is exciting for me to share with my students!
Welcome to the beginning of our semester and welcome Class of 2026! A message to all of my students:
This message is for all Ceramics sections- as each class block is combined with Intermediate, Proficient, and Advanced students...the first week of school will focus on becoming familiar with our classmates, our studio, tools, daily routines, safety with ceramics equipment, and an overall understanding of how ceramic projects start from a ball of dirt to beautiful & functional art works.
This message is for all Art1: Beginning Art classes-the first week of school we make time to focus on becoming familiar with our classmates, our studio, tools, daily routines, safety around art supplies and materials, and an overall understanding of the details of our classroom studio and our curriculum in art.
The reason for making these important connections the first week of school allows for enhancement in student inquiry as well as cultivating an appreciation for the art of ceramics through hands-on studio projects with fun and creative lessons that challenge your ability and expand your knowledge in the arts.
As we move from one project to the next, you will experience growth in your personal skill and performance in your technique. Pacing is important in Ceramics and all Art classes, so typically you must allow 1 week for creations in Intermediate projects and Beginning Art 1 class, and 2 weeks per project for Proficient and Advanced students, absences will delay your progress.
Our Ceramicss classes are combined with Intermediate (Level 1), Proficient (Level 2), and Advanced Ceramics (Levels 3/4) within each class period. We work diligently to utilize our time within our studio space to allow each student a means to express themselves artistically as well as learning to appreciate and respect the art created in our classes as well as historically and culturally.
I look forward to working with each of you!
