Attendance
Our day begins promptly at 8:00am and ends at 2:30pm. Students may enter the classroom no earlier than 7:30am. If your child arrives after 8:00am, you must stop by the office to check your child in. No child should be dropped off in front of the cafeteria or in the bus lot. This is a safety issue. When your child is absent, please send a note stating the reason for the absence when he/she returns. A note is needed even when your child leaves school in the middle of the day. If no note is sent your child is counted as unexcused.
Transportation
If there is a change in transportation on certain days, you must send a note or call the office before 2:00pm to let us know. Please do not call your child’s teacher if there is a change in transportation because the message may not be received in time. We will not send your child home a different way unless you send us a note stating the change. Parents picking up their children should arrive at 2:25. Students will not be dismissed for parent pick-up any earlier than 2:25 unless they are checked out early.
Visiting the School
New Hanover County schools continue to work to improve student safety. Please help us keep our students safe by signing in at the main office. This is a mandatory procedure and a New Hanover County expectation. You will be given a dated visitor sticker at the office. All volunteer sign-ins will be held in the office.
Volunteering
We love to have volunteers help our students and our staff! If you are interested in Volunteering, please fill out our schools Volunteer Interest Form and return it to your child’s classroom teacher. We will require you to attend one of our training sessions and also review our Volunteer Handbook.
Lion’s Folders
Each student will have an orange Lion’s folder. Please make sure to check this each night, go over homework and papers sent home and sign important forms. Also, please make sure to take out any returned work so that we may keep folders neat and organized. Folders should be brought to school each and every day!
Newsletter and Homework
We will send a newsletter home each week in your child’s Lion Folder. The newsletter will list homework, so please post it in a convenient location, such as the refrigerator. Your first grader will have homework Monday through Thursday, unless indicated otherwise. However, reading is an expectation every night and this should be recorded on their reading log nightly.
Progress Reports and Report Cards
We send home Progress reports in the middle of each nine weeks and report cards at the end of each 9 weeks. This is to help you monitor your child’s academic progress. Please make sure to review and sign each report and then return the signature card the next day.
Conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences are extremely important. It is the best way for us to work together to review and monitor your child’s academic progress and set goals for their learning. Each parent will be asked to meet by the end of the first 9 weeks to discuss the results of their beginning of the year assessments. Parents may also schedule a conference with the teacher at any point in the year if you have questions or concerns.
Book-In-A-Bag
Students are expected to read each night. Every day student’s are responsible for choosing a new book to take home to read in their Book-In-A-Bag. (If your child is not bringing home a new book each night, please let us know so that we may remind them to pick a new book!) Students may read the book with a family member or independently. Students are encouraged to read the book several times before returning it. If a book is not brought home one night, please have your child read a book from home. Please make sure to fill out your child’s reading log nightly. Children are rewarded for reading consistently.
School Rules
Wrightsboro rules for behavior are part of our effort to develop a sense of classroom community, self-control, and responsibility. We will discuss, model, and practice our rules throughout the year. Our four school rules are:
1. Be respectful
2. Be safe
3. Be responsible
4. Be kind
Classroom Behavior Plan
I believe all students have the ability to succeed, so I think it is important for students to take ownership over their actions and behavior. We will be using a Clip Chart System for students to track their behavior. Everyday students are expected to come in Ready to Learn and then they have the choice to move their clip up (if they make good choices) or move their clip down (if they do not follow our expectations). Our color system is explained below:
*Pink: Cool Cat-Outstanding Choices!
*Purple: Excellent Choices!
*Blue: Good Choice!
*Green: Ready to Learn!
*Yellow: Slow Down and Think!
*Orange: Stop and Think! (Student Reflection sent home)
*Red: Teacher Choice (This means there could be a phone call home, loss of free choice at lunch and/or recess, a classroom bounce or an office referral.)
Birthdays
Birthday invitations will be distributed at school only if either all the children in the boys or girls, or the entire class are invited. If you would like to send in a special treat for your child’s birthday, please just send a note in advance. Birthday’s will be celebrated at the end of the day at 1:45.
