Welcome!‎ > ‎

About me

I was born, raised and educated in the UK. As a small child, all I ever wanted was to be a teacher - I even set up my own 'school' for the local neighbourhood kids during the school holidays!

During my years in full-time education I also worked part-time as a hairdresser - this explains why my hair changes often :) - in a bar, and for the AQA Examinations Board. I received a joint honours degree in English Literature, English Language and Gender Studies from The University of Hull and then spent four years in the 'real world', working for an architect's company in Manchester and then in admissions and examinations for The University of Manchester. Eventually, I came back to The University of Hull to work for the Pro-Vice Chancellor in the research and development department. Whilst there, I took lots of courses in IT and completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management, which soothed my need to learn - as well as to organise - but it was not enough. And so I returned to Manchester Metropolitan University and finally completed my Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, specialising in Secondary English with Media Studies.

I taught in the UK for six years before embarking upon my International adventure. I was in Qatar for four years, then in Malaysia, at the Nexus International School Putrajaya before coming to Singapore. I am an advocate of personalised learning and, through the Apple 1:1 system, have developed a strong ethos of innovative learning practices that foster independence and place responsibility in the hands of learners. Proactive in cross-curricular and extra-curricular activities, I seize every opportunity to develop and challenge the ways learners think and perceive the world. As a qualified and experienced Yoga teacher, I seek to nurture the whole individual, bringing with me an enthusiasm to inspire and encourage learners to embrace English, to respect language and to love learning.

As a life-long learner myself, I recently commenced my Masters in Education and Instructional Technology at the University of Maryland, and during 2012-2013, qualified as a Google Apps for Education Certified Teacher, a Project Based Learning Certified Teacher, a Flipped Classroom Certified Teacher an iPad Prepared Certified Teacher, a Chrome Classroom Certified Teacher, and a Flat Classroom Certified Teacher, and a Digital Citizenship Educator; all of which are innovative and current thinking and learning methods for 21st century learners, which I am currently exploring and beginning to implement in my classroom. I also took courses on Learning Environments with Stanford University and Digital Cultures with the University of Edinburgh. During my career, I have trained to support second language learners as a Teacher of English in the Secondary Mainstream Classroom (TESCM), as an IB MYP and DP teacher and have been head of Year and assistant head of English, as well as responsible for DP extended essay coordination and curriculum development at Key Stage 3/MYP and Key Stage 4/IGCSE level.

I moderate a global chat for educators on Twitter every Saturday (#satchatoc); spoke at a literacy conference in Singapore in 2012, and presented at the Google Summit KL in 2013. I have been published on Talks with Teachers.com, Sophia.org and The Guardian's Teacher NetworkTo learn more, follow me @MrsHollyEnglish on Twitter for constant sharing and updates of new ideas for teaching, learning, reading and technology.

As well as all this, I also read as much and as often as possible - my 2014 reading can be found HERE. I also run a virtual book club via Twitter, where we try to read recent publications each month - please feel free to join in by checking out the list of reading HERE and tweeting about the books using the hashtag #bookamonth.

I also try to find time to run and completed my first half-marathon here in Singapore in May 2012. I have run three more half-marathons since, and also try to find the time to squeeze in swimming and Yoga. In addition, I am also a wife to my amazingly supportive husband, who is a fabulous Art teacher, and mother to my two imaginative daughters. As a family, we adore reading, writing, creating and travelling round the world.
