What is your first unit of the school year? Is your unit highly engaging, relevant and rigorous for a middle school student? Think about using your very first unit to be centered around a current event that involves close reading, analysis, discussion, argumentation and thoughtful writing. Below you will find a suggested 9 day mini-unit that challenges students to argue who should be on the new $10 bill. With a short current events based unit, you can model key literacy standards such as annotating a text, citing relevant evidence, paragraph form, note-taking, discussion protocols and drafted writing that students will use for the rest of the year.  I highly recommend using this as a first unit as September 2015 has a spotty schedule of only 12 school days. Start the year with content that feels relevant and connected to your students!
