Cabot School Physical Education

Hello and welcome to physical education at Cabot Elementary School! This site will allow you a glimpse into the physical learning experience of your student. It is my goal as their physical education teacher to help these students become comfortable with their movements, and gain something positive from each class. I hope to provide students the opportunity to explore interests in many various activities, but also allow them to build a strong foundation of functional and efficient movement.

My style of teaching is based on the "Skill Theme & Movement Concepts" approach developed by George Graham and Shirley Ann Holt/Hale. This approach provides students to work individually on age-appropriate skills. If you click on the link, it will bring you to a great explanation of what I do from the very book I teach from! I also combine this with TPSR, which is Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility as it works along with our Cabot Core Values. Here is an excellent article about the benefits of combining these together.

As students get older (grades 3-5) I also use another approach called Teaching Games for Understanding. I use this later in units after students have been able to work on their skills as an individual or with partners. Using the TGfU approach allows them to apply the skills they have acquired over the years into small sided games and scenarios. Students will usually work in groups of 4-10 depending on the lesson for the day. Allowing smaller groups gives all students a chance to practice their skills in game play.

You can check the "What We Are Learning" to see just what your students may be doing this year in P.E.

Please remember to provide comfortable, supportive footwear for your students. This allows them the ability to participate safely in any activity they may enjoy throughout the day. While I enjoy a good pair of flip flops, and enjoy the comfort of slippers or other fleece-lined footwear, it's difficult to feel safe if I'm participating in activities.
