Whether your issue is Bayou Corne, crime in 70805, voting rights, education, women’s rights, transit, racial equality, LGBTQ, housing… whatever your issue - if it’s about a more equitable Louisiana, then RootsCampLA is for you.
This isn’t your everyday gathering; it’s an “unconference.” Instead of pre-set powerpoints and “expert” panels, participants like you design sessions and decide the program. This doesn’t mean “experts” aren’t in the room. They are — many of them are you. RootsCampLA is about fostering homegrown talent.
idea is to bring together activists of all stripes as equals, and have
an honest exchange of ideas. When we learn from one another, we take
away new ideas, make new connections, and strengthen our work.
WHY ROOTSCAMPLA IS IMPORTANT FOR LOUISIANA
As advocates, we strive to develop a place where all people live in the promise that our nation's forefathers declared at our birth: "that all [human beings] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
In Louisiana, it often appears that those who truly hold this principle in our hearts are few and far between. We see hospitals and mental health facilities closing. We see our children's schools being destroyed. We see increased attempts to privatize prisons with promises made to for profit entities that some how, some way incarceration rates will guarantee shareholders see unprecedented dividends. Our gulf is being polluted, whole neighborhoods are being swallowed by toxic sinkholes, and no one is being held accountable.As activists, we are often left to wonder if we're the only ones standing up for the best interest of the common good. The good news is we aren't, and that's what RootsCamp is all about.
