Science words we know

  • Permeate (verb) Definition:  Permeate means to go through something.  Some molecules can permeate a cell membrane.    Sentence:  Iodine can permeate through a cell membrane.  Another sentence:  I can penetrate through a forest.  (Credit to Romeo!) Process, structure or molecule: Permeate is an action. Actions are processes.  Other forms of the word: Permeable is the adjective for the verb "permeate."  It describes a material that allows things through. "semi-permeable" describes a material that allows SOME things to go through, but not everything. Image from here.

  • Diffuse (verb) DefinitionWhen molecules move from and area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until an equilibrium, or a balance, is reached. Diffusion can happen through a cell membrane, because a membrane is permeable.     Sentence Glucose molecules can diffuse across a cell membrane because they are small, but starch molecules cannot diffuse across a cell membrane because they are very large molecules.Other forms of the word: Diffusion (noun)Process, structure or molecule:  Diffuse is an action. An action is a process.   Image from here.

  • Glucose (noun) Definition:  Glucose is a molecule.  Glucose contains atoms of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.  Glucose is produced during the process of photosynthesis.  The plant uses glucose as food. Sentence: With sunlight, plants make glucose using water and carbon dioxide molecules.Other forms of the word: Any word that ends in "-ose" is usually some form of sugar, ie, fructose, sucrose. Process, structure or molecule:  Glucose is a thing, so it is a molecule. Click here for a very cool website with a 3D rotating model of glucose!Image from here.

  • Photosynthesis (noun) Definition:  Photosynthesis is the process by which most autotrophs (plants) use to make their own food.  Photosynthesis uses sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water as reactants (ingredients).  Photosynthesis makes, or produces, glucose and oxygen.  Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of a plant.  Photo means "light"Synthesis means "to make"Plants make glucose and oxygen using light. Sentence: Plants photosynthesize water and carbon dioxide to make glucose and oxygen. Process, structure or molecule: processOther forms of the word:  Photosynthesize (verb), photosynthetic (adj)Image from here.
