Academic/Leadership Opportunities


2020 will mark the 35th year MLS has provided exceptional high school sophomores from across Missouri the opportunity to discover and expand their leadership potential. The three-day seminar is offered free of cost to the student selected to represent his/her local high school. Students are sponsored by Missouri’s local civic organizations, businesses, and individuals who believe in the impact of MLS.

  • Girls State affords participants an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens by informing them about the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship. 

  • Every participant at MGS will receive two college credit hours from the University of Central Missouri if she meets specific requirements while attending MGS.

  • Missouri Girls State delegates that complete the program are eligible for various college scholarships at Missouri colleges and universities.

  • The tuition fee is $225.00 per delegate.

This course is sponsored by the American Legion in cooperation with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The underlying purpose of the Missouri Cadet Patrol Academy is to provide firsthand experience of the role of our law enforcement officers in promoting and safeguarding American freedoms and rights. The program consists of a typical week of intensive Patrol recruit training. Including, classroom instruction in the history of law enforcement, defensive driving, radar, motor vehicle laws, first aid, drug and alcohol abuse, as well as demonstrations of police skills such as personal defense. Organized sports will be a part of the program, as well as tours of criminal justice facilities.


Age 16-18

Must have a C average or higher (2.0+ GPA)

Must furnish own transportation to and from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy

Must be of good moral character and come well recommended

Applicants must be in excellent physical condition and able to participate in a rigorous physical program.

Copy of Valid Missouri drivers license

  • Statewide leadership and citizenship training program that is nationally recognized.

  • Hands-on learning experience designed for young men in their junior year of high school.

  • Provides a broad understanding of government on the city, county, and state levels.

  • Teaches the duties, privileges, responsibilities, and rights of American citizenship.

  • Participants are distinguished as leaders, good citizens, and academically sound students.

  • Over $2,000,000 in scholarships available after successfully completing MBS.

  • Participants may become eligible for two or three hours of college credit.

  • No cost to student.

Established in 1990 as a project of Leadership Springfield, the Academy is open to juniors from nine Springfield public and private high schools. Thirty-two students are selected each year for a shortened version of the adult program. The program goals of the academy are:

  • To provide exposure to community structure and issues.
  • To provide interaction between developing leaders and the established leaders of today.
  • To develop personal skills needed for future roles as leaders.
  • To emphasize the importance of community service.
  • To harness the enthusiasm of youth to help solve local problems.

Who Should Apply?

Current high school juniors in Missouri high schools during the 2019-2020 academic year are welcome to apply to the 2020 Missouri Public Affairs Academy. 

What are the Application Criteria?

  1. GPA of 3.0 or higher
  2. Recommendation of high school counselor or teacher
  3. Record of community involvement (service to school, place of worship or community)
  4. Willingness to attend the entire nine day academy

What is the Cost of the Academy?

A non-refundable $50 registration fee is required after students have been accepted to the Academy.  All other Academy expenses, including housing, meals and all Academy activities are provided by Missouri State University at no cost to participants. Travel to and from the Academy is not provided.

What is the Application Deadline?

Applications must be postmarked no later the March 15, 2020.  Early applications are encouraged.  All applicants will be notified of acceptance no later than April 1, 2020.
