First Year Seminar (FYS) is a one (1) credit course that is required for all first year students. The course facilitates students’ transition to the college environment through a process of self-examination and exploration of the college community. The course curriculum is designed to promote learning and integration of academic and personal behaviors that will enhance the student’s performance and success at Newbury College.
Once Orientation has been completed, Orientation Groups transition into FYS sections on the first day of class. The same group of students and Orientation Leader will continue to work together throughout the semester. A Faculty member will instruct the FYS section with the assistance of the Orientation Leader for that group who will transition into their role as FYS Peer Mentor. Faculty and Peer Mentors will guide all First Year Students through the FYS curriculum including discussions on a common reader. Each year the college selects an inspirational common reader that will be the required text for all FYS sections. A copy of the book will be provided to each first year student at PREP Days or mailed to those students who are not able to attend PREP Days due to extenuating circumstances. Information on this year's common reader is provided below. Click on the link for more details.
