Beginning with 2011- 2012's Junior class, all students at Nelson County high school will need to complete 10 hours of service learning in order to receive a credit for Government.

Participants have two additional options:

  1. Provide 50 community service hours through the school or within the community over their four year high school careers and earn the Board of Education Diploma Seal of Excellence in Civics Education or
  2. Provide over 100 community service hours through school or within the community for their four year high school career and earn the Presidential Volunteer Service Award with graduation recognition.

FFA students conduct an annual reforestation program in the community.
They are also given pine seedlings to take home and plant to help control erosion problems and restore timber land.
